red bull music academy

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Red bull have been running their academy now for well over a decade and as far I’m aware it’s completely unique in its vision and delivery. The content on their site is staggering and in my humble opinion un surpassed.

Last month saw the academy touch down in London and the guest speaker list was incredible. Those that were lucky to be in the audience were treated to lectures by some true legends and new artists breaking through

The cool thing about the red bull music academy is that although its sponsored by a multi national drinks company its still retains the true ethos of underground electronic music in all its forms and delves deep into the minds of the artists and in this day in age that is a rare thing.

If you want to be part of next years academy in fall 2011, applications open early next year. Details, exact dates and event location will be announced soon - keep an eye on their blog, Twitter and Facebook!

We’ve posted a few of their lectures here before and here are a few more video lectures that are essential viewing

Funky Bashment

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Now I’m not one for new genre names and sub genres, to coin an over used phrase Good music is Good music. But sometimes its needed to make distinctions and draw a line in the sand so things can move forward and I’m all for that. One of the genres that’s been bubbling for a bit on the undaground is UK Funky and now a new sub genre has mutated from this is funky bashment. Championed by Gabriel of The Heatwave it’s a mixture of UK Funky tracks with dancehall vocalist flowing on top, be it UK or JA artists. At the moment it producing some fresh new exciting music. Artists like Shystie, Ms Dynamite, Maxwell D and Busy Signal to name but a few all have hot tracks right now plus funky vs bashment events are starting to spring up over London.
